Nearly thirty years of search.
One public test.

Can FirstRanking.com earn its name? This independent laboratory will document the attempt—strategy, failures, evidence and all.

The wager

A strong domain is a head start.
It is not a strategy.

Google says words in domain names are only one of many relevance signals, and its exact-match-domain system is designed not to over-credit them. That makes this name interesting—not magical.

The actual work is harder: publish material people would seek out, demonstrate firsthand understanding, earn references honestly and make every visit worth the click.

A practitioner’s long view

Five search eras. No permanent playbook.

Ciaran has built sites through nearly three decades of changing search. This project treats that history as perspective, not a shortcut.

01

1998–2003

Directories & density

Submission, on-page repetition and primitive link signals shaped a young index.

02

2004–2011

Links & authority

PageRank matured. Anchor text, link quality and penalties rewrote the playbook.

03

2012–2018

Quality & intent

Panda, Penguin and semantic understanding moved the work beyond exact keywords.

04

2019–2024

Helpful systems

Experience, meaning, usefulness and site-wide quality became harder to separate.

05

2025–now

Answer surfaces

AI summaries and multimodal discovery changed where visibility begins and clicks happen.

Experience deserves an audit trail.

“I’ve seen tactics work, decay and become liabilities. The durable lesson is simple: understand the person searching, make something genuinely useful, and keep measuring reality.”

Ciaran has built websites and businesses across nearly thirty years of search. Some earned and held valuable positions. FirstRanking.com is where that experience will be tested in the open—without pretending memory is data.

The standard

If this site rises, you’ll see why.
If it doesn’t, you’ll see that too.
