“We rank number one” sounds objective. It often omits nearly everything required to reproduce the observation: the exact query, country, city, device, date, account state, result type and period being summarized. Modern result pages make that omission more consequential.
01 / The old shorthand
Position once described a line. Now it describes a surface.
The traditional mental model is a vertical stack of organic links, numbered from one downward. That model was always simplified, but it was useful. Today a page may begin with sponsored results, an AI answer, a map, products, video, discussions or a featured extraction before the first standard web result appears.
Calling each of those “rank one” collapses different mechanisms and user experiences into a single flattering number. A citation inside an AI answer can be strategically important. It still is not the same event as owning the first conventional organic link.
If the reader cannot picture where the result appeared, the claim needs another noun.
02 / Five common surfaces
“First” only makes sense inside a named category.
03 / What position measures
Search Console reports an average, not a universal shelf number.
Google Search Console’s performance report can group impressions, clicks, click-through rate and average position by query, page, country and device. Average position summarizes the topmost position of a property when it appeared, across eligible impressions. It is not a replay showing that every searcher saw exactly the same arrangement.
Personalization, language, location, device and ongoing system changes can alter results. Low query volume can also make a short period noisy. That is why this project uses a 28-day reporting window and pairs first-party performance data with dated, fixed-condition observations.
Complete ranking statement
04 / Our definition
For this experiment, first ranking means a sustained number-one standard organic result.
FirstRanking.com will use the phrase first ranked only when the site holds the first conventional organic web result for the exact phrase “first ranking” in fixed U.S. English observations across desktop and mobile for 28 consecutive days, with Search Console data corroborating real impressions.
Other wins receive precise labels: cited in an AI Overview, featured snippet, top ten average position, or first-page mobile result. Precision does not diminish those outcomes. It makes them useful.
05 / Rank versus outcome
A position can be impressive and commercially irrelevant.
Search visibility is an intermediate measure. The publication must also attract the right people, answer their need, earn trust and create a reason to return. A lower position for a precise, valuable query can matter more than first place for an ambiguous phrase.
So this lab will eventually keep two scorecards. The public experiment tracks the literal phrase in the domain. The business scorecard will track qualified readership, tool use, citations, subscriptions and responsible revenue. Neither will be used to impersonate the other.
Ranking is where a result appears. Performance is what happens because it appeared. A credible report needs both.
